The “Painted Desert” is in the Four Corners area of the great western deserts of the USA. It probably started out as a sea depositing layer upon layer of mineral rich sediment in a world of constant change. Upheavals in the earths crust laid the sea dry, earthquakes, volcanic action and erosion played their distinctive roles and the different colors and formations were exposed. The colors are enhanced if you are lucky enough to be there after good rains. On one occasion I visited the area of Las Vegas just after a dust storm and the colors were muted to very disappointing landscapes. These areas are also called Badlands because the clay formation is normally very difficult to negotiate and in the wet it becomes impossible. Please click on the photo to view the gallery.
